Penguins of the Falklands 2017 50p Cupro Nickel Coin Set Coin Quality

The Falkland Islands describe themselves as the penguin capital of the world as more than 1 million penguins nest on the Islands, for that reason in 2017 Pobjoy has produced a set of four lovely Native penguins in colour on 50 pence pieces.

  1. Rockhopper Penguins are impressive creatures reaching about half a metre high and weighing no more than 2.7 kg. These small penguins take their name from the rocky shore-lines where they nest in tall grasses called Tussocks. The Rockhopper in appearance looks just like other penguins but are quickly distinguishable by the black and yellow spiky plume upon their heads. When you look closer you can see a few other distinctions including red eyes and pink webbed feet.
  2. The Gentoo Penguin is renowned for its waddle and its sweeping tail that moves side to side when it strolls. Its scientist name in fact implies rump-tailed! Gentoo penguins grow quite big and are really the third biggest species and the males reach a height of 90cm and weight of about 8.5 kg. They sustain themselves primarily on a diet of krill, shellfishes and fish which they catch with ease due to their top swimming speed of 22mph.
  3. The King Penguin is a very large species of penguin, second only to the Emperor Penguin and reaches a height of about 100cm and weight of 18kg. They sustain themselves on a diet of little fish and squid which they dive to extraordinary depths of over 100m to catch. The Plumage of the King penguin is comparable to the Emperor Penguin with a contrasting brilliant yellow/orange spot at the top of the chest. The King penguin likewise has this same orange on its cheek spots where this is much lighter on the Emperor.
  4. Magellanic Penguin, named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, is a penguin indigenous to the Falkland Islands, where they nest in dense flocks. In look, they resemble a Humboldt penguin, with black bodies, white abdomens and with 2 black bands between the head and the chest. Their heads are black with a white stripe across their eyebrows. In the wild these penguins can live to around 25 years!
The obverse includes the exclusive Pobjoy Mint effigy style of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
