Royal Artillery 300 First Day Cover

The release of this set coincides with the visit to the Island of the RA 300 Baton which started a circumnavigation of the world in May 2015. Included is an illustrated card with text by Regiment historians Frank Baldwin and Colonel Charles. There is also a tribute to the Gunners by veteran Major Kate Philp. Kate, who lost her lower leg in Afghanistan, is a loyal supporter of Service Charity Walking with the Wounded.

The first stamp reveals a figure from the funeral of the Duke of Marlborough, in charge of establishing the Royal Regiment. The blue coat dates from 1716. The second stamp shows an officer of the Royal Horse Artillery C. 1800. The third stamp portrays an Gunner 4th (Hazara) Mountain Artillery Battery, in 1890. The 4th stamp is based upon a picture of Major J R Drinkwater Royal Field Artillery, a Manxman who served in the Royal Field Artillery in the First World War. The background shows an 18 pounder gun, the common area weapon of the war.

The fifth stamp reveals an officer of the 15th (Isle of Man) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery with background revealing a 40mm Bofors weapon and also a North African harbour. This unit was a territorial unit from the Isle of Man who also served in Greece, North Africa, Italy as well as North West Europe as a component of the 7th Armoured Division, the Desert Rats. The 6th stamp illustrates an officer of the Royal Artillery in Afghanistan in 2008, with a Warrior fighting vehicle in the background.
