The 2006 Aircraft of WWII - Supermarine Spitfire Cupro Nickel Coin Coin Quality

The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was utilised by the Royal Air Force throughout World War II. The Spitfire was integrated in numerous variants, utilising a number of wing configurations, and was produced in greater numbers than any other British airplane. It was likewise the only British fighter to be in constant production throughout the war. The Spitfire continues to be popular among enthusiasts; about 50 remain airworthy, while a lot more are fixed exhibitions in air travel museums throughout the world.

The Spitfire was created as a short-range, high-performance interceptor airplane by R. J. Mitchell, primary designer at Supermarine Aviation Works, which operated as a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrong from 1928.

During the Battle of Britain, from July to October 1940, the Spitfire was perceived by the public to be the primary RAF fighter, though the more numerous Hawker Hurricane took on a greater percentage of damage against the Luftwaffe. Spitfire units, nevertheless, had a lower attrition rate and a greater victory-to-loss ratio than those flying Hurricanes due to the fact that it has a greater performance. Spitfires in general were charged with engaging Luftwaffe fighters throughout the Battle.

The coin itself features a Supermarine Spitfire diving though the clouds with two more Spitfires in the background. The obverse of the coin carries a fine effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.
