The Seychelles 2013 Celebrate the Election of His Holiness Pope Francis I by Pobjoy Mint. On 11th February 2013, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, the 265th Pope announced his resignation discussing he had a ‘lack of strength of mind and body` as a result of his advanced age, and his resignation came to be effective on 28th February 2013. He will continue to hold the design of His Holiness and the title Pope yet will play no part in the main responsibilities of the Catholic Church.

On 12th March 2013, 115 eligible Cardinals entered Conclave to choose Pope Benedict's successor and after 5 ballots white smoke showed up from the chimney of the Sistine Church to show that the minimal two thirds majority had been reached on the following day and a statement was made from the porch of St. Peter's Basilica that the new Pope would be Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

Archbishop Bergoglio has taken the name Pope Francis in memory of St. Francis of Assisi. This is the first of a number of firsts as His Holiness Pope Francis is the first Jesuit and also the very first Latin American to be voted Pope and he is in truth the first non-European Pope to be elected since Gregory III in 731 A.D.

Pobjoy Mint is happy to reveal the release of a brand-new coin being produced in behalf of the Central Bank of Seychelles to commemorate the election of His Holiness Pope Francis. The design features a picture of His Holiness the Pope with the bordering text "Habemus Papem" the Latin expression which translates as "we have a Pope" then "Pontifex Maximus (his non official title, yet this phrase describes the Pope as the Catholic Church Chief Bishop) Franciscum I".

The portrait is bordered by the fourteen Stations of the Cross, a prominent Catholic dedication to indicate the enthusiasm and fatality of Jesus Christ, and an illustration of rosary beads "utilised whilst undertaking the Stations" separating the Stations and the inner portrait. Not only is this a very appropriate layout central to the methods of the Catholic Church, however is very apt as the Conclave and the election took place so near to Easter.

The Republic of Seychelles, an island haven in the Indian Ocean, is predominantly Catholic and has issued coins previous depicting both His Holiness Pope John Paul II (who visited the Seychelles in 1986) and His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI after his election. This coin will be created in a variety of metals and sizes featuring Unc. Cupro Nickel, Sterling and Fine Proof Silver both ordinary and Goldclad® and all precious metal versions will be struck in the greatest Proof high quality for which the Pobjoy Mint is renowned.
