To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the start of the Second World War, Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce the release of The Solider, in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel. Issued on behalf of the British Indian Ocean Territory, this coin shows a British Soldier along with three tanks which are a Maltida, a Churchill, and a Cromwell.
The reverse also displays the wording "1939 - The Second World War - 1945", whilst the obverse of the coin features the Pobjoy Mint exclusive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1939, before the declaration of the Second World War, the British Army was a volunteer army, but shortly after war was declrared, it became full conscription.
During the early years of the Second World War, the British Army suffered defeat in almost every part of the war in which it was deployed. After the introduction of mass conscription, the expansion of the British Army was reflected in the formation of larger armies and army groups. From 1943, the larger and better-equipped British Army never suffered a strategic defeat.
