Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s very first exploration from 1901 -1904 was upon the RSS Discovery which in fact features in the design of the Polar Medal. One of the goals of the exploration was to view and then press south to the pole which resulted in the discovery of the Polar Plateau. At the end of the exploration the Discovery ended up being caught in the ice and dynamites were used to release it!
The Reverse of this coin includes an artist's impression of the Polar Medal that was inaugurated for members of Captain Scott's exceptionally difficult and very first exploration to Antarctica in 1904. The image was produced by Ernest Gillick and reveals the RRS Discovery, with a sledging celebration in the foreground.
The obverse includes the Pobjoy unique effigy design of HM Queen Elizabeth II in extraordinary information. In order to preserve the exclusivity of this coin, we are producing just 10,000 in Cupro Nickel. This coin is released on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory and the denomination of the coin in both metals is £2.
