The Colossal Squid has long been an animal from a sailor's nightmare, appearing in folklore throughout the ages it has actually often been synonymous with the Kraken. A magnificent beast infamous for dragging unwary men to their doom and emitting a foul stench that comes from its lungs with each breath.
In reality, the Colossal Squid or Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni is not as 'foul' as the reputation that precedes it, however there is some fact to the legends. A feud exists between the Colossal Squid and the Sperm Whale who battle on an impressive scale in the deep blue. Sperm whales are found covered in scars on their backs from the beaks of this squid and the beaks are found in big quantities inside the whale's stomachs.
These squids are incredibly elusive and unfamiliar to science. They can reach an estimated 14m in length and weigh as much as 750kg but only a handful of juveniles have actually ever been officially recorded. A 5 meter specimen was caught on a long line off the coast of South Georgia at a depth of 1625 meters and it was so heavy that it could not be brought aboard the boat. They likewise have the largest documented eye in the animal kingdom (and that was from a young female) with a size of over 12 inches!
Pobjoy Mint believed it fitting to commemorate the life of such an uncommon marvel of nature by releasing this commemorative coin in blue Titanium.
