The Gentoo is the most common penguin on the Falkland Islands which are the home of the biggest population of this type of penguin in the world. Gentoo penguins are a long-tailed types of penguins first discovered by science in 1781 on the Falkland Islands by biologist Johann Reinhold Forster who travelled the world with Captain James Cook.
The coin includes a headshot of a Gentoo penguin which is displayed in remarkable colour which includes the apparent white bar over the crown on the head of this specific type. The obverse of the coin includes the special Pobjoy Mint effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
