Isle of Man Post Office is proud to present a set of 12 stamps which celebrate 125 years of British athletes attending the Olympic Games. This issue specifically highlights the great achievements of Manx Men and Women throughout the history of the modern Olympic Games, in addition to six other competitors believed to be some of the greatest British Olympians of all time.
During 2021, the British Olympic Association will be honouring its athletes from the inaugural Modern Olympic Games which took place in Athens in 1896 and re-telling the stories of some of the country’s finest athletes and sporting moments of the last 125 years.
With this stamp issue we wish to celebrate the representation of Manx athletes at the Games. Although only a small Island, our sporting impact represents much more than our geography or population, they have all brought back the spirit of the Olympics to share with the next generation of athletes who aspire to represent our Island through Team GB. Manx Olympians; Mark Cavendish, Peter Kennaugh, Marie Purvis, Tim Kneale, Maurice Herriott (attended 1964 Tokyo Games), and Sidney Swann are all illustrated on the stamps.
In addition to representing Manx athletes, we also feature six non-Manx competitors to represent the outstanding achievements of Team GB throughout the past 125 years. This selection displays elite sports men and women symbolising some of the nation’s favourite and most successful Olympic sports.
