We commemorate the Centenary of the Grytviken Church with the release of a brand-new coin on behalf of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands by Pobjoy Mint Limited.

Christmas Day 2013 viewed the centenary of the consecration of The Whalers Church at Grytviken. The Church was constructed at the initiative of Carl Anton Larsen, the founder and first manager of the whaling station. The wood church was designed by Larsen's son-in-law, and pre-fabricated in Strømmen, Norway. It would have room for a congregation of 200 and had a space for reading and writing. The church awaited consecration at Christmas and both bells that were cast in Tønsberg, Norway, were rung at midnight on Christmas Eve. Kristen Løken officiated at the consecration of the church on Christmas Day. At the same time, he baptised the daughter of the station manager.

After Løken went back to Norway in 1914, there was sporadic attendance by pastors for short periods up until 1931. For much of the time the church was rarely used for services. It was much more frequently used for films and concerts, until a cinema was built in 1930 alongside the church. It was likewise made use of as a carpenter's workshop and as a potato store. Funeral services were an exception. The church needed to be cleared for the funeral of Sir Ernest Shackleton who died at Grytviken in 1922 and is buried in the cemetery. Throughout the whaling years there were four wedding events and it is now used for wedding events of passengers from cruise liners.

In 1995 collapse of the building appeared imminent. The Commissioner for South Georgia, directed that the building must be made sound and water resistant. Over the next couple of years there was a comprehensive repair that consisted of enhancing the major framework and changing the roof. The cross on the steeple was taken out by a helicopter of the Royal Navy for repainting. The church is now one of the tourist attractions of Grytviken. It is the only building that has preserved its original function. It is decorated at Christmas when guests from cruise liners and staff of naval ships hold carol services.

The coin itself features the church and the snowy landscape of South Georgia. The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Available in Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver, each metal coin has been struck four times to obtain a magnificent proof finish.
