Following the popularity of previous Titanium coins, Pobjoy Mint has launched a brand-new Titanium coin for 2014 on behalf of the British Virgin Islands featuring the Seahorse.

Seahorse is the title given to 54 types of aquatic fish in the genus Hippocampus which comes from the Ancient Greek hippos suggesting 'horse' and kampos indicating 'sea monster'. Seahorses are found in shallow tropical and moderate waters throughout the world. Seahorses like to stay in sheltered areas such as seagrass beds, estuaries and coral reefs.

Seahorses range in size from 1.5 centimetres to 35.5 centimetres and are named for their equine appearance. Although they are bony fish they do not have scales as other fish do. Rather they have a thin skin which is extended over a collection of bony plates which are organised in rings throughout their body. Each species has an unique number of bands. Seahorses swim upright and, uncommon among fish, seahorses have a flexible, well-defined neck. They also have a coronet on the head which is distinct for every individual. The Seahorse feeds upon small crustaceans which float in the water or crawl on the sea bed. With their superb camouflage and a great deal of patience, they can ambush prey that float within striking distance.

The design on the piece includes a gorgeous seahorse with its tail entwined around some coral. The piece has been produced in Turquoise Titanium and is likewise available in Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver. Titanium is extremely tough to strike and each coin is genuinely unique as no two Titanium coins are alike. There is also a lined effect that exists on the coins which is additionally unique to Titanium metal.
